China has a ways to go to match US military strength. Just think, the US has 11 aircraft carrier groups loaded with tactical aircraft. China has 1 used aircraft carrier with no carrier based aircraft logistics. US carrier strategy and tactics have a 70 year history of fine tuning and battle testing. China is just getting
started.

Hi Ed,

China’s military growth would be slowed down in large part if we first focus on economics. Here are a few good first steps 1) Pay back all money owed to China 2) Set a new level playing field with regard to US/China trade 3) Force China to set a realistic value for their national currency. 4) Stop all US monetary aide to China. China desires modern “blue water” navy, let’s let them pay for it…. Final thought, re-double our national cyber security infrastructure. Just my two cents

I'm Lasmono Dyar, senior and siglne Lecturer of the new Science of Psychorientology as invented by DR.Jose Silva as from 1980. I must say that what has been explained in Silva's invention is very near to what Gerald O'Donnell has explained in all of his interviews. He was an alumnus from the Silva coursework, So with Burt Goldman and others who I know since my services for Silva International and recently (2002) for the indepenent company, Silva Ultramind ESP LLG.I've been involved in many para-normal phenomenon since childhood. Some years ago,I had learned that one of our para-normal people, has had a meeting with two aliens on a friendly occasion near minnight and had a very serious talk with them.It was then placed in the magazine for paranormals at that time. But it doen't exist anymore. It has described the allien as seen on your picture above. It means actually that in fact we (human beings) aren't alone in this Universe. But research as has been done so far is still far away from success. We have still a lot to learn. Therefore my letter to Mr. Gerals O'Donnell. But our para-normals are not too clever and are a little at a high profile instead of the contrary. There's NO control whatsoever and our Universities doesn't have a Para-Psychological faculty, that could do researches on rhis object. A pity.A contribution to be contemplate on.Best regards,Lasmono Dyar.

Unfortunately US presence inthe Region have declined. Once China has the economic advantage over the US, they will continue to move towards building a modernised military. Their only rivalry in the Region will be India.

This is why perhaps the US is now looking at improving relations with India and building its presence in the Region.

As a military veaertn I have a deep respect and understanding of the importance of chain of command and civilian leadership of our military. History has proven, e.g., Truman's sacking of MacArthur, that chain of command and civilian leadership is sacrosanct and violations should be dealt with swiftly and decisively. To have the top general in a war zone undermine the civilian leadership of the war effort warrants an immediate dismissal of that general, as was properly done in this case. That said general was careless and arrogant about what statements he and his staff shared with a reporter evidences more than insubordination, but the kind of character and discipline (or lack thereof) that has no place anywhere in the chain of command, let alone at the top. Thus, I find the reporting incisive, warranted, necessary, and nothing close to just looking to put another scalp on the wall.

Discussion: CHINA'S MILITARY POWER: A GROWING THREAT

Playing Devil’s advocate here, but is it really a direct threat to U.S. National security? If we weren’t still in Japan, South Korea or Australia right now would we care what China is doing ? Would or should we have any concerns other than keeping international shipping lanes open in the area? Do we foresee China trying to take over territory in the region like Russia did during the Soviet Union era? Do we see China bent on a nuclear arms race like the Soviet Union? Do we fear an invasion on good old mainland USA by the Chinese navy?

It may be so, but maybe it is needed some perspective here. This book, although clearly incomplete and not well written IMHO, shines some light about these issues:
